Critique Feedback for a portrait novice

Yep - it was hard enough as it was! She’s just learnt to crawl so she never stays still... I think if I turned her so the light was hitting 45 rather than 90 degrees there would have been less contrast.

Would some fill flash have helped to get better lighting on the face or just utilize the natural light better?

A few from my trips out over the last fortnight

Elgol is cracking. Just the right amount of movement in the water. The viaduct is a great composition too.

Critique Feedback for a portrait novice

I was going for the ‘environmental portrait’. It was fairly dark and I didn’t want to go higher than ISO 800 as my d3300 gets pretty grainy. I guess grain is better than motion blur!

Critique Feedback for a portrait novice

Hi All, I've not done much portrait photography (usually landscapes) so I thought I'd post my attempts here for some feedback - here are my thoughts: I like the background/setting and the side lighting works quite well. The shadowy side of her face might be a bit dark. Also warming and...

    Critique One from the summer...

Dartmeet Tree by Tom Pinches, on Flickr It's feeling dark and cold at the moment so I thought I'd share a photo from the summer. This was a lovely old tree next to the river - didn't think much would come of it because there was bright midday sun but it seemed to work. Not sure why I went for...

    Beginner Venford falls, Dartmoor

Hi Craig, It was taken at 18mm on a crop sensor. But I cropped to 4:3 ratio and also had to rotate, which cropped it further. I guess the blown-out water is something that needs to be right in camera. Also I'll try to hold back on the vibrance in future!

    Beginner Venford falls, Dartmoor

This is a spot I've wanted to visit for a while. The conditions didn't do it justice so I plan on revisiting at some point! Venford falls, Dartmoor by Tom Pinches, on Flickr

Show us yer film shots then!

I'm fairly new to film photography (I'm on reel number two!). This was my attempt at B&W. I set up a little shoot with my daughter who seemed to enjoy the limelight! Taken on my Praktica Super TL with Ilford XP2 400. film037 by Tom Pinches, on Flickr film040 by Tom Pinches, on Flickr

    Pirelli Calendars

When I was doing my motorbike license a year or two ago at the training centre there was a photo on the toilet wall of these glamour models next to a bike. I remember thinking it was bit... I don’t know... antiquated. A bit tasteless. I certainly wasn’t offended and the feeling wasn’t “this is...

    lens fungus

I recently acquired some older manual focus lenses from an old Pentax film camera and one of the lenses had loads of fungus. I tried to dismantle it to clean it off but couldn’t get it back together again! To be honest I had a feeling that might happen and the lens is only worth about £25 so I...

OFFICIAL I HAVE A NEW (FILM RELATED) TOY THREAD!!

I didn’t realise that little white button (which doesn’t much look like a button) needed to be pressed. I guess Pentax really wanted you to use their new fangled aperture priority mode! Thanks David.

OFFICIAL I HAVE A NEW (FILM RELATED) TOY THREAD!!

Thanks for the insight Chris. The 50mm is the 2.0 but it’s got quite a bad case of fungus so I’m temped to try and pick another one up - maybe the 1.7 or 1.4! They go pretty cheap for what they are: £20-30 on eBay. The only problem is that the exposure mode dial seems stuck on auto (I.e...

OFFICIAL I HAVE A NEW (FILM RELATED) TOY THREAD!!

I took my newly acquired Praktica Super TL to the parents in law for Christmas. I showed it to my father-in-law and he mentioned that he had an old Pentax ME Super with 3 lenses (50mm, 28mm and 75-150) that I was welcome to use. So it turns out film cameras are like buses! Looking forward to...

Beginner Where do you buy your film?

Thanks all - that gives me lots to go on esp @Harlequin565 ’s master list! As you say, I’m still in the process of experimenting with film stocks (in fact I’m still in the process of getting my head around shooting film as I have a fully manual camera - not helped by going down google rabbit...

Beginner Where do you buy your film?

I’ve had a look at AG Photographic and had a peruse of Amazon. Is it cheaper to buy it in a real shop to save on postage? Or do people buy in bulk? Cheers, Tom

OFFICIAL I HAVE A NEW (FILM RELATED) TOY THREAD!!

That's a useful little article that shows the point pretty well. Explains why my first reel of film was grainy as hell! I think I saw a thread here about different ways you can ruin a reel of film. Getting that rule wrong could be added to it! fortunately I was only underexposing by half a stop...

OFFICIAL I HAVE A NEW (FILM RELATED) TOY THREAD!!

That's interesting. I'd heard somewhere that with digital it's better to overexpose and film it's better to underexpose.

I can see why people go through the rigmarole of developing their own film. You lose quite a lot of control of your images in a lab.

OFFICIAL I HAVE A NEW (FILM RELATED) TOY THREAD!!

Thanks for the insight. It seemed like some had much less grain than others, which didn't make sense but I suppose some will have received more noise reduction than others. Also the softness I mentioned on some of the other photos didn't seem like missed focus; they had a specific quality -...

OFFICIAL I HAVE A NEW (FILM RELATED) TOY THREAD!!

Thanks for the feedback. Yep it's some deadwood - wanted to try some close-up. 3rd shot was wide open (1.8) and pretty close so wouldn't be surprised if I missed focus - but I don't think the lens is that great wide open either. I can't remember what aperture/shutter speed I was using - usually...

OFFICIAL I HAVE A NEW (FILM RELATED) TOY THREAD!!

Here are some faves from my first outing with my Praktica TL super (I also had to take photos of the photos with camera phone to upload them!). They're a bit soft - not sure if that's grain from the film or me shooting too wide. I imagine it's the latter. First film shots by Tom Pinches, on...

Beginner Where to start with film

Hi John, can you recommend any favourite good-value colour film? Can @Tilz recommend any of his favourite B&W film? I presume you can get it cheaper online that in a shop? Where do you get yours? Cheer, Tom

Beginner Where to start with film

Hi Paul, I'm in the same position as you but about a week on. I recently bought my first film camera for £20 in a charity shop and I've just shot my first reel of film today, which is currently in the shop being developed. Very excited! Like you I had no experience with film cameras - I had ask...

Hi All, I’m The proud owner of a Praktica Super TL - my very first film camera leading to thoughts such as ‘so I’m stuck with this ISO for the whole reel of film?!’ and ‘where’s the histogram on this thing?’. Just waiting for an obscure battery to replace the Cold War thing that was inside...
