Are none formal academic organisations worth getting qualifications from?

I was looking at The British Academy of Photography which isn't formally a college or university and they are accredited to BTEC for HNCs and HNDs in photography. For the HNC the home study is £1,195 which isn't bad at all compared to a college or university that would charge £9,000 for tution...

    Beginner HDR Question

I wouldn't recommend doing a -3, 0, +3 as the difference between the exposures is too great. If you need that much dynamic range it might be better doing -4, -2, 0, 2, 4 . I have personally tried doing 3 stops difference and it didn't work out for me. I would recommend that you do at the most...

Are there any good recruitment sites that advertise photography related jobs?

I have been looking for possibly going for a photography assistant job and having been using job search sites like, but to be honest they don't really host many photography jobs. Do any of you know of any good recruitment sites that offer photography style jobs other than the likes of...

    strangest thing you've ever photographed.

The strangest or weirdest thing that I have photographed is myself. I have been doing photography as a hobby for like 8 years and have had no problems being behind the camera, but being in front of it doing my own portrait was one of the strangest and weirdest things I have done. I just felt...

Thinking of 5D4 from 5D3 - Is it a no brainer?

If the cost of betting the 5D4 is high for you then I'd seriously recommend that you rent the camera rather than jumping in then finding that you don't need it.

Does shooting live view at sunset ruin the sensor?

Probably an old question. I was wondering if shooting in live view with the sensor constantly exposed to the sun when doing sunsets, can it damage the sensor? I used to compose optically using the pentaprism but have found live view such a much better choice but am cautious about using it...

Is going from printing A3+ to A2 really a big jump?

Happy new year all! Last year I got an A3+ printer love it to bits. I could see that there is a difference from A3 to A2, but not such a huge difference going from A3+ to A2 and was wondering is it worth actually going for A2 when you are already printing at A3+?

Are dome diffusers worth it for speedlites?

I've never used speedlites in my architecture photography before, might give it ago to see how it makes a change. Here is my portofolio if you don't mind me pimping. :D

Are dome diffusers worth it for speedlites?

To be honest I forgot about the focal length of the lens. 99% of my photography is architecture and I don't really use strobes much. I am going to use the same settings again then set the manual zoom on the speedlite to its widest and see if that makes things better. If not then try a...

Are dome diffusers worth it for speedlites?

I recently had a family shoot and used the flash off camera with a ttl cord. At first I killed the ambient but found in the shots that there was vignetting due to the spread of the flash. Would a dome diffuser help much more? If so could you recommend a reasonably priced one to have a look at.

    Birmingham visit

I had a cracking time in Birmingham earlier this week. I mainly shoot historical architecture, although I thought I'd try some modern architecture in the mix. 1. The Bullring 2. St Martins Church 3. The Cathedral Church of St Philip Here is a link to my flickr profile page if you...

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Owners Thread

About dynamic range I have an Canon 7D MK I and a Canon 5Ds. Even though the pixel-pitch is quite the same the difference in dynamic range is huge. They've made huge inroads in dynamic range going from the 7D MK 1 to the 5Ds. I don't have the 5D MK IV, but at a guess the difference will be...

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Owners Thread

I have a 5Ds and the pixel pitch is roughly the same as my 7D MK I because of the size of the sensor. Even though the size of the photocell sites are roughly the same the dynamic range of the 5Ds is much much better. Their sensors have come a long way in 5 years.

    The Big Smoke

The first two are alright, though I have to say I love the last one. As for halos I find that when I go over the top in Adobe Camera Raw in the Clarity slider it can product halos, although if I keep of the clarity and instead use the sharpen slider it produces more "clarity" without the halos...

    Recent Trip to Glasgow

I think the University is quite quiet at the moment as I think most students have finished and it is graduation time. For the quadrangle the were actually a few people in it. Basically I metered the scene and shot in manual mode and took a few photographs all using the same exposure settings...

    Recent Trip to Glasgow

I am aware of perspective distortion with using such a wide angle lens and am aware that I can correct it via stretching the image in photoshop. My long term goal is to get a full fame camera and use a tilt shift lens. Unlike most people I don't want the full frame for noise performance but...

How much of an improvment would you get going from a cropped sensor to fullframe?

Thanks for the feedback I just wanted a rough guestimate between the 7D MK I and the 5D MK III on ISO performance. I am thinking of maybe upgrading to a full frame in a years time, though in the mean time I will be using this old 7D MK I until it drops. To be honest one of the selling points...

How much of an improvment would you get going from a cropped sensor to fullframe?

Just out of curiosity how much of a gain in improvement would get going from a cropped APS-C sensor to a full frame with regards to ISO performance? Would you get 1 full stop of difference, or even more like 2?

    Hint Of Light

Meh I think people get "too" hung up on the rule of 3rds. I wish it were called the guideline of 3rds instead of the rule of 3rds, you don't need to literally apply it to every photograph. As for this photograph I think it is fine and even though the rule or 3rds isn't applied to the horizon...
