    I bought it used i am afraid. I just don't understand why it would work fine with normal alkaline batteries

    1.2x4 would give 4.4v. I will try different batteries before talking to canon although i am not sure if they are going to be any help. Switched from Nikon and things already look bit more complicated here.

    Yes it's a strange situation. Not sure what is the issue and what else i can do. I bought batteries from 7dayshop. Don't want to spend another 20 quid on new batteries in case they don't work either.

    It won't even switch on. Works fine with normal not rechargeable batteries. I am using Panasonic eneloop lr6 so wondering if this is anything to do with LR6

    Yes normal alkaline 1.5v works without any issue
