    Most overrated band?

I mentioned him in a post above. Great player.

    Yeah, that's a clever song. I like it a lot (y)

    Most overrated band?

I often thought that the kudos of using S. African musicians and mining the music of that country for that album was what gave Graceland the acclaim it got. Don't get me wrong, it's a good album but, for me, not as good as the hype.

    Any Wilko fans?

    Most overrated band?

TBH I haven't noted a difference although I thought he was actually much more enjoyable when he played with Zappa. I had assumed it was Frank's control freakery that did the trick though.

    Most overrated band?

Good read. I hadn't known about that. I guess rock music is so ubiquitous and high profile the 90% is more noticeable.

    Most overrated band?

Yes I'd agree with you there. I was a major fan of Deep Purple but really it was because I admired their musicianship rather than their songs which I found hit and miss. It's also True S&G didn't do many bad songs. I'm sure there are ones I truly hate but I'd need to give it some thought ;)

Actually we agree on something here, Robin. I like Prince ( I'd stop short of genius, mind ) and I also thought MJ was a superb dancer; one of the few I enjoyed watching.

    Most overrated band?

Fair enough Robin but the Zeppelin songs you mention are exceptions even in their own catalogue the vast majority of their pieces are forgettable. I'm not really that keen on Jimmy Page either and was actually going to mention him in the overrated theme earlier. Anyway, I'm concluding you and...

    Most overrated band?

Probably an underrated guitar player IMHO is Neil Young. I reckon it's because the songs are so powerful his guitar playing takes second seat.

    Most overrated band?

Just considering this thread. I tend to agree that there's a huge amount of rubbish in rock music - probably 90% of it is throwaway guff and seems to serve for a bit of lifestyle strutting or guitar shredding pyrotechnics. Maybe this is one reason there's a number of good players who produce...

If we're going back in time a little, how about Roy Buchanan?

    Most overrated band?

Stevie Vai is an interesting one. He's enormously impressive in many ways but I often get the feeling that he's so keen to show his technique that he loses the point. I find a lot of post internet guitarists do that. I'm not sure if that's a fair crit of Stevie or not.

    Most overrated band?

Yeah that's just a tongue-in-cheek stage trick thing though. When he's doing the rest of his stuff he's great. (Not sure I like his singing that much) Oh, and he's another one who produces less than riveting songs. I'm sensing a theme here :)
  15. W

    Most overrated band?

Considering total finished product rather than constituent parts; how about bands who made songwriters sound great. The Bad Seeds spring to mind. Nick might have some great ideas but they'd be nothing without them.
  16. W

    Most overrated band?

Its not his playing, its the bliddy awful songs. I like Stevie Winwood. IIRC he's a church organist now

    Most overrated band?

Slightly different genre but Ry Cooder for sure. Love that guy's playing

I know what you mean about Bonamassa. Good assessment IMHO I loved Gary Moore. He sent chills

    Great vibrato ;)

    Most overrated band?

Man, I'm off on one now! I'll be up all night with my mind going round ;) What about Mark Knopfler. I greatly admired his playing but never really got into Dire Straits much.

    Most overrated band?

Funnily, the first time I heard of Albert was when he was playing with Heads Hands and Feet ( with the guy from Chas 'n Dave ) backing Deep Purple in Glasgow in 1970. I was pretty young then and he blew me away. The singer kept referring to "the great Albert Lee" after each song and my mate...

    Most overrated band?

I guess there's the contribution of the guitarist's technique on the one hand, and on the other there's the total end product. Clapton is a mystery to me which was kind of my point. Yes he can play well enough and certainly did in his heyday and I also agree about his Mayall and Cream years...

ABBA were excellent. I don't believe the Bay City Rollers were really rated at all so I'm not counting them. I do agree Oasis were pretty overrated though.

    Most overrated band?

I'm not sure, but I thought the monotonous alienation theme was the Kraftwerk thing illustrated by the lyrics. Mind you I could be talking mince

Well how about Russ Conway. He had a bit of finger missing too ;)

Best concert I ever went to was Radiohead. I love them to bits.
  27. W

    Most overrated band?

I agree about his manner. I do like his piano playing, though he isn't exactly a technical virtuoso. But then there's an awful lot of barely competent musicians in the pop and rock game, (though lets not do that one again ;) ) What he does have though, is taste, which is never to be...

I don't know if it has been mentioned, but the way so many interviewees start their responses to questions with the word "so" drives me slightly mad.

Surely true only if we were saying "if we're carrying out a comparison of ... our geographical origins". If we're saying " If we're comparing ....... where we originated" I would be correct. Unless I'm wrong of course. If you want carry out a comparison of these two things I've been comparing...
