    Studio Rail Systems

Regardless of all the pros and cons of a ceiling rail system, has anyone given the Walimex version a try (it's a rebranded Jinbei)? We're kiting out a multifunctional room (ceilings are 3.2m) for video podcast recording.

    LED lighting suggestions (for video)

I agree, but the bulbs are large and I am wary of breakage. Also LEDs are getting better. Matching colour output between different manufacturers (or even within a line) is my big concern. So the two light kit with stands is a sweet deal. Something to ponder. Thanks, Garry. edit: I'm not so...

    LED lighting suggestions (for video)

G'd morning lighting ladies and gents, I'm currently writing a grant application, to produce some instructional videos with some of my students in my lovely purple-ish molecular biology lab. Most of them are probably gonna be relatively close-up: lab-bench and upper body visible. As you can...

Wescott Apollo biting the dust, what replacement?

If you want to go cheap this time, there are tons of Neewer fold-up softboxes with S-mount adapter on Amazon. They don't come with grids though.

    Has anyone used these backdrops?

I'd strongly agree with that. If there isn't enough tension in the metal band, the background is practically useless. And this happens to Lastolite as well. I also don't think the Lastolite is vastly better. If I remember correctly, the loops & fasteners are sewed on in a way, which will...

LED? video lighting for talking heads in small space (spare bedroom)

Ok, managed to plug the HDMI out into a bog-standard screen via a DVI adapter. It's a bit distorted as it's a 1200p screen, but what the hell. Word of caution, the Tascam DR-60 goes into a record ready mode when pressing the record button only once. Only a second button push starts the actual...

LED? video lighting for talking heads in small space (spare bedroom)

Another short update. UPS finally managed to ring my door bell on the 6th (!) attempt yesterday and delivered my lights. I also decided against the HDMI capture route for now and got a Tascam DR-60 mkII for audio recording. A Aputure VS-2 FineHD field monitor had to go back because (a) the...

LED? video lighting for talking heads in small space (spare bedroom)

Hah, so this spiralled a little. If UPS hadn't absolutely screwed me over, I'd have my lights already. One will be a panel, the other will be S-mount. Current equipment list, in case anyone is interested: PIXAPRO LED100D MKII Daylight Balanced LED Studio Light with 90CM Umbrella Softbox &...

LED? video lighting for talking heads in small space (spare bedroom)

Thanks for your comment, James! I should probably say that I don't mind to spend a bit of cash to avoid hassle. I know I could probably do all my recordings with the current equipment in the room. Just use the A6000 as is and curse whilst using the PlayMemories app. Use the Zoom H1 on the...

LED? video lighting for talking heads in small space (spare bedroom)

Here's a little snap of my little kingdom (at least until the wifey decides otherwise ;)). It should illustrate the space issues a bit more. I found this Pixapro Glopad (https://www.essentialphoto.co.uk/product/pixapro-glowpad-450d-slim-profiled-daylight-balanced-led-panel/) - looks decent...

LED? video lighting for talking heads in small space (spare bedroom)

Hidy ho neighbours! I was thinking about posting in the 'Talk Video' section, but I think is more appropriate here. Here's my dilemma: I'll be recording a whole bunch of talking head & shoulders videos of myself for a weight/fat loss programme. Convenience is important, so I was thinking of...

Maybe we are just spoilt for price in the normal speedlight and simple studio-light department, but if $350 turns into £350 (with VAT and other duties) this feels quite expensive.

Parabolic umbrellas (flatter not deep) - anyone experimented ?

Usually they are a section of the side of the parabola, so they don't need to be angled upwards as much and don't collect the elements and dirt. That's the reason the antenna in the focal point seems to sit off-centre. If you took a "flat parabolic" umbrella and put the light-source in its...

Anyone tried this StudioKing softwall box?

I'm not sure this would generate such pleasant light on your subjects' faces. If it just sat on the floor, the majority of the light will come from below.

Flash Durations - your opinion on these please. UPDATED

If you get RAW data output from your oscilloscope you might be able to calculate the 70% timings with a few integral equations in R (don't ask me how to, it would need some digging in my highschool maths notes). edit: damn, integrals, not differentials, duh!

Flash Durations - your opinion on these please. UPDATED

Wouldn't the area under the curve be way more useful, e.g. when was 80, or 90% of the light dumped? Just timing t.1 or t.5 times really doesn't tell you that much if the tail end still dumps a lot of energy. Unless I'm mistaken and all waveforms follow them same kind of pattern.

Oh that's very short. I don't think there is a backed up strategy for such short term investments. Except high frequency trading, but that's actually cheating.

Stocks and Shares - I need your help!

That's a good attitude. Stock picking and market timing does not work. Every reputable scientific economic publication about these topics will tell you so. Colour Run

Slap a UV-filter on and wrap the remainder of the camera in cling-film. Worked great for a holi-festival concert I attended once - and I was in the thick of it. Though it's a real pain in the eyes, if you are a contact lens wearer like me, as they usually ad anti-caking salts to the starch powders.

    Medium Format

True, but there is a whole pile of out-modded film cameras as well (bad Rangefinders, terribly unreliable AF, dingy prisms, etc). It's nice that some film cameras stand the test of time, but these are largely in region which the affordable digital market hasn't breached yet - don't see many...
