Nice idea for a thread. I'll post mine up soon. As a beginner it would be nice I people could post exposure time too to get an idea. Thanks.

Good idea for a thread, been looking to get one of those, so interesting to see what results can be achieved, and in the same thread!

love some of the seascapes here.

Newbie question I know but what are 10 stop shots?

Think I've asked that before but can't really remember :)

Jon, 10 stop shots are where a neutral density (ND) filter is used. You can get ND filters in various 'strengths', a 10 stop one does what it says on the tin and allows the photographer 10 stops in exposure. It allows long exposures even in bright sunshine. This is very simplistic terms and I am sure someone could put it more eoquently than me but I hope that helps.

So it allows you to shoot a longer exposure at a wider aperture?

Is that right?

Yes. However, you can shoot at wider apertures but the wider the aperture the more light you let in which in turn changes the effect of your ND10 with shorter exposure time.

Jon, if you have a look at most of the photographs (all fantastic btw) posted above, they are mostly F8 and above. This adds to the ND10 effect, giving more depth of field to the images. Low ISO, high F numbers all lengthen exposure times.

Thank you blakester. Appreciate you taking the time to explain that for me.

May have to try it for myself now :)

You are welcome Jon, I need to practice what I preach and get out with my 10 stopper:D

I've had a quick search and cant see anything, if there is a thread I apologise.

As per the title, lets see your 10 stop shots. I'll start with a few of mine...

Hi Mank,
You have posted very beautiful pictures on this thread.
I am not posting any thing here, but as I am learning this art of photography
I have got a question,if you could answer please.

Please excuse me if it sounds very small or petty question.
I have Nikon D5000, and if i want to take long exposure shot, it gives me most 30 second option and the next is Bulb. Could you please explain how you can shot 74 second or more than long exposure shots.
Is there any proper technique or Nikon D5000 does not have this facility?

Your guidance is much appreciated.
Muhammad Arif

Cloud drifting from left to right within a sunset, the B+W ND10stop creates lovely purpley and orange tinges - this was a 1m 43s exposure at f13

Hi TomB,

Thanks for explaining it to me.
So what i understand is, if I use a remote for it, still it will be manual, i mean I will hold it for as long as I want.
Then when people say they take 30 mins long exposure shot, are they keeping the shuttter pressed for 30 mins by their fingers?

Many Thanks for your help

muhammad you can buy a remote that locks the shutter button. this alloys you to take a photo as long as you want :) you will still need it in bulb mode.

Great selection of images, here are a few from me.

Arif, as every else has explained I set the camera to bulb mode and I have a remote with a lock on it so I just take it off when I'm done and hey presto!
