I usually shoot these guys from just a few inches, with a Raynox, attached to my 70-200 f4.
Today, I had been shooting birds with the 500 prime and 1.4 converter mounted on my D500. When I finished, I thought i'd find out how good it would be for macro.......OK, not as good, but I was quite impressed!
