OK, finally got over to Fairburn Ings the other day.

Here's a couple of hand held attempts using the 150mm and available light.

C&C welcome :)

Why do I never see these things?

Great colours and, as mitch says, pretty damn good for handheld!

Thanks very much for commenting guys (y)

Mitch...I just knew if I said damsel flies they'd be Dragon flies :bonk:

John... Maybe this was beginners luck as it was my first trip over to Fairburn and we saw this blue one, a smaller, more flighty red one and an absolute *monster* of a green one. Easily 4 times+ the size of this one though it didn't land just hovered for a short while and then buggered off. Looked like something out of Jurassic Park IMO and probably made a habit of terrorising the local wildfowl!

Damselflies fold wings back when at rest (like pics posted) whilst Dragonsflies keep wings out flat (IIRC there is one possible exception to this rule, but can't remember the exact case).

But the above should suffice 99% of the times :)

Nice shots too - went to Fairburn yesterday, but weather wasn't really upto much. The kids enjoyed feeding the ducks, swans etc though. The shoreline past the RSPB carpark hasn't half been battered by the recent flooding though.

Nice shots especially the 1st has nice colouring.
I believe a damselflies wings are all the same size but on a dragonfly the rear wings are larger than the front wings.
