I think colour might have helped quite a bit with this one - too many parts of the image have a similar tonality that it's hard to sort out what's going on.

Took me around 2 mins to find what you were refering to , The person almost looks like a rock as well

I kind of agree but I think it makes the darks too dark.

I like the colour version but agree maybe a slight shadow lift or lift the mid point of the tone curve slightly.
