I guess this breeds in fresh water because of the distance from the sea

No when I photographed it, I didn't know it was a possibility but I saw a photo of a horsefly recently and thought that it might be the same.
Getting ids there is really difficult, if it is a grasshopper,phasmid or arachnid it is easy, beetle possible anything else unless it also lives in the US no chance.
There is a lot more insects there and a lot less people interested particularly for Lepidoptera and Diptera. Saying that for grasshoppers etc it is just one person but he is very active
 
Thank you both, we don't see many crabs here, I was amazed to see it so far from the sea, I guess they breed in rivers (although it might not have been studied).
