I'll keep you all guessing - but the beak should give away the family - a strong and powerful beak

but I'm being unfair as it is a S African bird ..... roll on January so I can get back there

I was going to say that's not a Uk bird! I guessed it was south African. Not a juvenile sociable weaver is it? Don't think so but I don't know SA birds too well.

Weavers have got longish pointed beaks for "weaving" ........... they do look similar to Canaries except for the beak

I wish!

I did see a Forest Canary though

but if you look at this Seedeater - the size of it's beak compared with it's head is amazing ... obviously eating is important!!
