Hi: I've recently done a shoot featuring a headshot of my wife for an upcoming book cover ; some are in front of a blank wall...others were shot intentionally in a room aiming for a Boka type effect.
She has since decided that a plain background would be better after all....is there a one button fix for this in Aperture, I wonder...or do I have to do a lot of brushing?

No idea personally, but google.....

From a quick glance through, aperture was an old and not particularly sophisticated package in terms of 'one button effects', so I think that yes, you will have a lot of brush-work ahead. You could download a free trial of On1 Photoraw which has tools to make background selection a bit easier and more precise. If you like the program they presently have 'black Friday' offers.

Many thanks for the suggestions guys .
I hadn't realised there was an Aperture 3 either....;something else to look into !!

Sadly Aperture has long been abandoned by Apple.
