Are these out of focus? (examples & focus test)

Hello,

I'm using a Canon 500D with a Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 lens. Most of the time I'm pretty happy with my photos, but last week for the first time, I decided to do a 100% crop and check the actual focus points.

Now I'm not sure if my photos are in focus as they appear softer than I'd like. If it's me or the equipment at fault (or if it's pretty accurate for this setup)? All photos are handheld with OS on.

These are all straight out of the camera, no editing at all for the purposes of this test:

I've also done a focus test (setting the ruler at a 45 degree angle) with the camera flat on the table, OS off.:

50mm @ 2.8

1. Focused at x10 through Live View

2. Manually put it out of focus, then focused through the AF center point

Thinking to deep m8ty. These look great to my eyes :) Mind you what do you think ? If you have to look at 100% crop I think all's well.

Shot no.3, the cake has an almost indentifiable finger print on it ! I'd say that was sharp enough focus all right !

They all look well in focus to me. Your never going to be happy with the focus at 100% crop, unless you fancy going to buy a Hasselblad.

Look good to my eyes, sharpness looks fine at point of focus especially in images 3 and 5 (zip on bathing suit). In your focus tests focusing through the live view seems spot on.

Its hard to say unless its a bit more controlled. I think you need a more contrasty subject than the ruler, and just set the AF to centre spot. Let the AF lock on and dont let the camera move, needs to be on a tripod to be 100% sure, I noticed you said they were all handheld in post 1.
