What with Covid and some other stuff it has been almost two years since I last visited any of our local nature reserves. It was a real pleasure to visit one of them again. It was rather breezy with not too much around, but enough to let me continue exploring the possibilities and probe the weaknesses of my still somewhat experimental rig: Sony A7ii with a pair of 2X Kenko teleconverters and a Laowa 100m 2X macro lens, with a Venus Optics KX800 twin flash.

These were captured raw and processed with a preset in DXO PhotoLab then image-specific adjustments in Lightroom and then two presets in Topaz DeNoise AI.

Great set Nick

Love the fly and cricket.

Paul.

Thanks both. I hope to be going back there quite soon, or to another of the local reserves. Based on the results of this session and yet more head-scratching I have an f-number experiment I want to do.

Thank you. :)

so with you lens and converters what magnification doe it give you ?

I get from infinity focus to 8:1, which on full frame goes down to a scene of 4.5mm x 3mm, which is about as small as I can handle at the moment hand-held out in the field. With the same setup on micro four thirds I would get down to around 2.2mm x 1.6mm, and in between these two with APS-C. I am using a Canon EF mount Laowa lens and EF mount Kenko teleconverters, so I could use the same combination with a different adapter on micro four thirds, and natively on my Canon 70D. It wasn't the same combination, but it was the same principle with the images in this album at Flickr, which were captured with a the Laowa 100 attached to a micro four thirds Panasonic G9 using a 1.4X teleconverter.

The working distance at 8:1 is around 72mm, compared to around 40mm with the MPE-65 at 5:1 (or 40mm at 7:1 with a 1.4X TC, or 40mm at 10:1 with a 2X TC).

Especially like the weevil no 3 Nick but all are excellent
Glad you’re getting out , there’s so much to see at nature reserves
