Critique B&W Cassidy

Good capture. Eyes bordering on the limit of being pp'd too much and skin maybe a tad too blanched but that said I like it. Well done.

Graham, that's a fascinating lens to use for a portrait of this type, but it's worked beautifully.
The eye contact is excellent and the DoF is shallow to keep my interests in the key area.
Lovely pp too

I like it, although i think you need to drag that opacity slider back on the pupils and whites. Cheeks also may be a tad too hot..... but overall its a great capture and nice mono conversion :)

Thanks for the comments everyone (y)

I've included the SOOC shot below. As you can see, the eyes are pretty special on their own. I didn't do too much to them, other than lighten the shadows after the conversion. The square is a reflection of my shed in the background ;)

I didn't apply any skin smoothing and the 'hotness' of the cheeks is probably because I went for the 'look' rather than detail. Although hopefully you can see the original image was not too hot...

I really appreciate the critique and hopefully the SOOC shot will balance things out a bit...

The colour one is a nice shot, but the mono conversion is much more dramatic, and has a lot of impact.
I wouldn't change anything if I'd taken it.

I would have to agree. The SOOC shot isn't very remarkable (sorry!), but the mono conversion and crop has produced a beautiful picture.

Really like the B&W, it reminds me of a old album cover. U2 maybe??

@Swanseajack Album cover - Boy by U2?

Know what you mean but this is clearly Cassidy by Graham and the b/w rendition is certainly one to be proud of.

Sometimes doing the conversion just totally suits the subject. Congrats Graham.

Totally agree it's Cassidy by Graham. My comment was from an image I remember on a record album from a good while ago, which has stuck in the back of my mind, so it must have been something good and powerful, which I think the picture is.

Morbid. Just had a google and the album is War

Edit: It must have been the U2 War cover which was in the back of my mind >https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=u2+album+covers&tbm=isch&imgil=g2hU0D2vxSkuPM%3A%3BDI3qiGUg9R53OM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fen.wikipedia.org%252Fwiki%252FWar_(U2_album)&source=iu&pf=m&fir=g2hU0D2vxSkuPM%3A%2CDI3qiGUg9R53OM%2C_&usg=__8XH9Tb5iVkpPKEmBIkRdKJqnk3Y=&biw=1536&bih=829&ved=0CC0Qyjc&ei=V15MVeXuKO6Q7Ab-y4GYAg#imgrc=gmiB2d3Yuw1kZM%3A;0vuuwZAyJ8zKxM;http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hollywoodreporter.com%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2Fimagecache%2Fmodal_800%2F2011%2F10%2Fu2-war_a_l.jpg;http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hollywoodreporter.com%2Fnews%2Fmysterious-u2-album-cover-boy-248855;648;365

U2 did Boy album first and then War came later.

Same kid in photos just older.

Agree, very memorable and distinctive.

from Wiki:-

"The boy on the cover is Peter Rowen (brother of Bono's friend, Guggi (Virgin Prunes), and now a renowned Irish photographer). He also appears on the covers of Three, War, The Best of 1980–1990, the unreleased Even Better than the Early Stuff, Early Demos and many singles.

The photographer, Hugo McGuiness, and the sleeve designer, Steve Averill"
