the majority seem to like unmodified images from out of the camera,
Unmodified? Really?
Image manipulation is just another way to produce images.
The process may be tastefully executed or not but is in no
way to be excluded from any approach… IMO.

SOOC is not a goal but a reference.
I thought I'd post this one to test the reaction and seek you views and critique.
Good DR and toning though I do not fancy the positive nor
the negative haloing.

What he said.

The vintage-style split toning works fine, the artificial grain ditto and likewise the fake edge-bleed although I've seen more authentic looking versions. The HDR-style processing has caused lots of artifacts in the image, with smudging and halos where wires and poles cross the sky, and in the clouds too, and these are a bit of a problem. There's also a few dust spots (my nemesis too) that could do with cleaning up.

The pic is potentially good and there's no need for a tin hat, but use of this kind of processing needs care not to fix one aspect and break another at the same time.
