Black and White

I recently went to Whitby abbey and couldn't get any satisfaction from the colour shots but I found in processing that Black and white seemed to really bring it to life

Nice shot altogether though the exposure is a bit off, too dark for me.

I do struggle with post processing

I was trying to get the clouds a bit more visible, I'm told lightroom is better than Elements

None of these really work as photos even before processing. Have a look at some youtube videos on composition. You'll learn loads and have much image improvement.

I think the first has a decent composition, you've got 2 sides of the ruin nicely. It is a little dark but I think that using the shadows/highlights dialogue in Elements would lift the darker areas and you'd still maintin the clouds. I would fix the verticals in number one as they are leaning in and converging, which is very common with a low down angle like this. All 3 are tight in the frame.

Some nice detail in all the images, it's amazing how images that don't always work in colour are transformed by a mono conversion.
