I have recently upgraded my lens inventory with a 400 f2.8, an amazing piece of glass.

This is taken with a 2x converter attached.

I was approxiximately 20ft away, so not too far. I have cropped it only from landscape into portrait and was taken hand held.

It is a Nikon lens that I bought from a chap on here recently. I was told the lens would work well with the latest 2x converter and certainly at close quarters it seems to prove correct.

Now to find that Kingfisher...

I do not think that your image shows the lens at it's best - the lens can perform far better that your image shows ........ just my honest opinion
