I have noticed this behaviour before where they flick the tail up and down but not sure why they do it.

That looks good stan, No 1 for me as the leaf is not so blown from the flash/sun and the way the damsel is situated is lots better than No 2.
These are though 2 great photos imo and the plain grey BG is different.
 
A couple of very nice shots Stan, with some good detail. My preference is for #1 solely for the more balanced composition.(y)

I know absolutely nothing about these things, but could the tail flicking possibly be anything to do with balance ?

Great shots Stan #2 for me as it shows the behaviour.

Tail flicking is often used to indicate suitability to mate.
 
Nice blue form female. Look out for the pink 'rufescens' form too. They're stunning.
