Brutal Architecture - an Open Thread

Hi, Ruhr-Universität Bochum/D :

Brutalism: This concept is inadequate, I think. Purism or Constructive Purism is more adequate.

At the time, the structure of concrete surfaces shows the structure of the wood it held before solidifying (Sichtbeton in German). An on the stairs and the floor you can see concrete,
the pebbles of which have been laid bare by removing the smooth upper cement layer (Waschbeton in German).

Another goal was to erect buildings requiring less maintenance, expecting future wage rises. And 20 years after WW2, one wanted long-lasting buildings.

Built for eternity (Für die Ewigkeit gebaut) was a saying at the time.

Before I changed my plans, I wanted to become an architect at the end of the 1960s ... ---

(Lots of weeds. Bochum belongs to the German province Northrhine-Westfalia, in the past the industrial heartland with coal mining and heavy industry.

These have gone down, tax revenues have gone down, everything decays ... )

A bit of the National Theatre on the South Bank.
Architect Denys Lasdun and founded by Laurence Olivier in 1963.
Prince Charles described it as a clever way of building a nuclear power station in the middle of London without anyone objecting.

This snap I did a time or two ago but was never really satisfied with the presentation, so its one I have revisited since changing how I do my PP.

Just a simple tourist type Snapograph taken at London UK of a scene looking out from the viewing gallery at the Tate Modern.

It's called "Blackfriars Tower"

It's called "Blackfriars Tower"

Thank you Brian, appreciate your reply.

"I'm sure it's also known as One Blackfriars with the Southbank Tower (formerly known as the King's Reach Tower) behind"

Hi, RUB in Bochum/D. Old brutalism on the left, a new neo-brutalism ? building on the right. Perhaps it is difficult for architects to design a new building for a brutalism environment ... :

Hi, local government building in Schwelm/D. Painted concrete art should make this building look less brutal... :

Great thread! I’ll certainly be following this as im starting to capture more Brutalist buildings. Heres some from The Barbican which i think is definitely worth visiting!

Its been the one brutalist location ive really wanted to shoot with colour due to the lake and colourful balconies.
