Given the success it had last year, I decides to use the same
toy and reproduce the exercise this year with the 16 students
of final semester at the trade school.

Can you guess…
  1. the purpose of this exercise?
  2. the number of light source(s)?
  3. the eventual WB difficulties?
  4. …others?
Please ignore the hot base… I did.

1 Demonstrate the effect achieved when using 2nd curtain flash
2 3 - Incident (to get the trails from the balls), softbox above and bare/snooted to the right of frame to freeze the action.
3 Balance the incident (possibly warmer than the flashes) and the flashes - mainly to please the eye since it's an artificial image where colour fidelity is relatively unimportant. (Unless part of 1 is to balance the lighting from multiple sources in terms of K values using gels as necessary.)
4 Fun!

This is one of the conditions in the shoot's description.

Yes, two light sources.
3 Balance the incident…
Very good but not quite on the button.
That was for sure. All the kids ended up betting who will
get it closest to perfection ie right on time, not too early
and not too late.

One setup and 17 shooters (including me). When it was
time to shoot, each student put hers /his own card in the
slot. These were my captures.
