Beginner Canon 6D with 1.4 or 70D

Hi, I have a 6D and 70D and although not new to photography I am new to trying to capture images of birds and BIF my imges with the 70D and Canon 400mm lens just don't seem to be sharp I like that extra extra option that the crop sensor offers with range but wonder would the 6D being a FF camera along with a 1.4 extender be a better option to use? Do show us some of the birds and BiF to see what you are getting and why they "don't seem to be sharp"
