Cartier-Bresson or Erwitt?

I've never quite known who took the iconic umbrella jump in front of Eiffel, but it obviously could have been Cartier-Bresson or Erwitt. I went to find out, and now the answer seems to be both.

The attribution to Erwitt seems obvious, Bresson a little less clear (it's not on Magnum). What really surprises me is that I can find no discussion anywhere of the two versions, or that one (presumably Erwitt?) was obviously copying the other. Does anyone know what the story actually is?

Interesting point, Lee. I seem to remember reading in an academic text that the original shot was Erwitt's and the HCB version a fake, created for nothing more than mischieveous purposes. Having said that the text, or my memory, could well be wrong!
