Went up to London yesterday for another walkabout and discovered the evening before that the Chinese New Year celebrations were being held in Chinatown over Saturday & Sunday, so thought I would pop along and check it out. However I had a moments inattention - having briefly played with a 1/4 black mist filter on the front of the camera, I forgot to remove it, and it was there for the whole of the day!

I've never been to a Chinese New Year celebration before but listening to several who had, it seems that the procession was a bit disjointed and a bit of a poor show.
I found it interesting but it was just one of those days when very little seemed to turn out right, all that way up to London and very little to show for it.
Anyway, here's a selection from the day that might give you a little flavour of the procession.

Better mist shots than missed shots. It used to be fun shooting the CNY celebrations in the old days as you could get very close to the lion dancers and come home with loads of shots. These days thousands of people head in to central London and it can be dangerous getting anywhere near Chinatown because of the crush. I see you were in Shaftesbury Avenue, so you missed the tidal wave of people in Gerrard Street following the lion dancers.

I think the mist filter gave your pictures an extra something, including a perceived increase in subject separation.

A nice documentary Gramps. You captured some good shots with the interaction between the performers and spectators - well worth the trip.

As for the filter, my equivalent of that is frequently spending too much time shooting with an excessively high ISO before finally noting that the shutter speed seems a bit too fast.

Thanks for the consolation Chris. (y)

That very same day I realised why I always carry a spare 64GB SD card in my pocket! :D
