Popped along to Goodwood yesterday morning for just over an hour to test the Sigma 150-600mm Sport lens I am borrowing. Used it on a 1D4 and also had a 1D2N with a 24-70 for some wider blurrier shots.

The Sigma is certainly no match for a prime lens in AF speed or consistent sharpness. AF is decent but wasn't as snappy at locking on as I would like, a few times it just didn't react at all. Even in sunshine ISO400 was typical (for 1/500sec shutter) which means when overcast much higher will be needed. I was shooting mostly at F7.1/F8 at a range of zooms. Nice to use, could push-pull on the monopod but I did find quite a lot of softish shots - maybe acceptable for some people but I do always aim for critical sharpness. Can still produce some nice shots though, no doubt about it, like anything will take getting used to to get the best out of it!

Here's a few shots linked from my Facebook. Few more on there and a little gallery on my site. I was only there for less than 2 hours though.

Cheers for looking. Comments appreciated. Certainly an interesting lens, anyone else got one and used for motorsport? How are you getting on etc?

cheers

Good sharp selection here and on your Facebook page. Interesting feedback on the 150-600. I tried the Tamron equivalent last year at Oulton Park and returned it for a refund the very next day! I had been thinking of trading in my Sigma 500mm f4.5 for the Sigma 150-600 but so far have resisted as I am reasonably happy with the results from the 500mm albeit without IS.

Have you still got your 7D Mark II (which I have seen being unboxed on your Facebook page) as I notice that you used the 1D4 and 1D2N at Goodwood?

Shame you didn't get on with it mate, all the feedback I have heard has been great (once you plug it in via usb and play with the settings a bit) okay most are BiF shooters but they should be harder - right?

So what next?

as for these ^^^^ 2 & 5 for me

Cheers Paul. I had two 7D2's but was firstly not satisfied with receiving "used" goods from Jessops, and then secondly I found performance (i.e AF consistency) pretty erratic/poor. There was quite a few people stating they had issues... hopefully now it's ironed out... but I will stick with the 1D4, I think it's better anyway.

As for the 150-600, I actually got on better with it on Sunday at Brands. Haven't posted any pics, but gallery here - http://www.ae-photography.co.uk/albums/12-07-2015-hscc-brands-hatch-photos/
