CLASSIC and important CARS - open thread:

Yup!

Saw quite a few classics out and about today. Not sure if there was a local show or rally - the weather wasn't really good enough to warrant so many out just for a Sunday drive. Far better weather last weekend and didn't see more than one or 2 classics on the roads.

There was a TV show last night about the new batch of Jaguar XKSSs. They're priced (or were - all sold out well before production started!) at £1,000,000 but a "real" '50s one is closer to 10 million or more. The new batch aren't even (AFAIK) street legal in the UK since they don't meet current safety or emissions standards. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/classic/jaguar-xkss-revealed-the-brand-new-1957-sports-car1/ Still, if I had a spare million or 2 kicking around, I would have been tempted! Apparently you could pick up a genuine D Type for peanuts in the early '60s - they were just out of date racing cars...

Hi, I had bad luck yesterday. I could have gone to 3 events. The one I chose after lunch, was the worst. As soon as I had found an ideal shooting position,
and the cars came, it started to rain ... ---

My wife does astro-photography. She is used to misfortunes like this, when the clouds come ... ---

The ones one should have bought: In the 60s you could buy a V8 BMW, a Mercedes 300 or a Jaguar saloon for 1000 DM in Germany (the monthly salary of a skilled worker).

But maintenance and repair, which look cheap today, were a lot then. A friend bought a BMW V8, but had to scrap it, when the starter failed and he could not
pay for it ... ---

I am quite happy with my old 300SE and the E430 estate. Both offer modern comfort and are serviced by Mercedes. I do not have to use specialists.

Fortunately, I do not have room for more than three cars. So, this is my limiting factor.

The other thing is age, maybe. I save too much, and spend too little. But this is my upbringing. I must live with that ... ---

A nice MGA:

If her photos are as good as yours she should post on here too.

Hi, my wife shows her pics in a Swiss astro-forum. There are mostly physicists and astro-physicists, a rather esoteric circle ... ---

But far too clean for a real off-roader!

Hi, not a real Porsche, often said about the Volks-Porsche at the time (frequently by those couldn't afford one ... ):

Hi, an MGB Coupe. The rope is not really necessary. The car is very reliable, the owner told me. But it looks nice ... --- :

Oddly, possibly my favourite Lambo - at least slightly practical (in theory, if not IRL!)

Hi, looks like a nice GT. --- However, from the 70s - and from Italy ... So, I would expect rust to be a problem. And no A/C?

These cars are nicer to look at than to own, I suppose. Must talk a little with an owner next time. ---

Something like it: a BITTER, made in Germany, using GM parts, body made in Italy:

Hi, a DB W123 (280E if the bumpers are original):

Hi, they are not rare here, but I always like to see a W123, reminding me of my first Mercedes I had from 1981 to 1990 ... :

Thanks for that, Immo.

The joys of classic car ownership!!! Throw in '60s/'70s Italian electrics and away you might go (if you're lucky and the entire Pantheon are smiling on you...)

There's a product made by Evans that classic (and modern) Jag owners swear by - Harry could do with a few gallons! (After a head gasket change!)

Mrs Nod had a grotty old Daischitzu Charmant with the reg A944??? - could sold the plate for way more than the car was worth but the MoT ran out and the car was knackered so went to the crusher (best place for it, although it was cheap!)

Hi, interesting, what people might pay for special plates. I Germany, the plates belong to the car, as registered. When sold, the car gets new plates.

For a fee (30 €, I think), you can choose a plate number, e.g. MZ - S - 300, if available. - I always pick numbers that are difficult to remember - you never know ... ---

To celebrate the 100-year-anniversary of Citroen:
