CLASSIC and important CARS - open thread:

I would not laugh about the "rubber band" when almost all cars today replaced the timing chain for a rubber belt. I do not know what will happen to the DAF gearbox if the belt breaks, but breaking the timing belt is a complete disaster.

breaking the timing belt is a complete disaster.

Can be but isn't always. There's a list HERE of engines that are interference (knackered if belt breaks) and non-interference.

Hi, DAF cars were not successful, but CVT is still with us ... ---

Also still with us:

Similar to the replicas of the Ford Cobra... interesting.

Like the good Cobra replicas, the Chesil Speedster is supposed to give a fairly accurate driving experience with a few zeroes off the price tag!

As for bad replicas, someone was marketing a Type 57 replica based on a beetle engine and floorpan...

Hi, my first and only BMW at the factory in Munich in 1990 (slidescan 2005), where I picked it up new. It was a 525i I had for 2 years at the company leasing rate.

I liked it but never got really used to the leasing rate ... --- :

Hi, an S-class. Years ago, I took a ride in one. I was most impressed by its power, speed and low interior noise.

But then, I had a 2CV ... --- :

Hi, der Grosse 600, coming home from the States. Let's hope for the new owner that it was properly serviced over the years there.

Otherwise, it can cost a fortune ... ---

Love this thread.

I've not got loads of 'good' shots of cars, but I keep a facebook album of anything I find that interests me...

Such as

XR3 high?

Used to see this sitting on top of a shipping container as the train left London Marylebone. Long gone now though.

Aston Martin Cygnet. You don't see many of these about. And for good reason. Not only was it 31k for a rebadged Toyota iQ, but you had to own another Aston to be able to buy one.

Hi, Kell, you had quite a car-photo jam to clear. - Over time, you may find more time to take pictures of your cars. - Of course, it is much more difficult to take car live pics,
so to speak, than at an exhibition ... :)

Yeah - I do have some from various car shows I've been to (like the first 300SL) but I do prefer to capture them 'in the wild' so to speak.

I work in Knightsbridge and during the summer, lots of rich Arabs bring their supercars over. Used to be a great place to spot the ridiculous. it's died down over the years as, unfortunately, most of the cars were driven really badly and no one could point them out because they didn't have number plates most people could read.

Now that they have to put on a temp UK plate, there are fewer cars, but also fewer accidents.

Hi, every opportunity of taking car pictures has its advantages - and drawbacks, be it at meetings, exhibitions or rallyes.

Over the years, I know which events in my territory are best for my style of picture taking.

I would not call myself a car photographer. I am just a car enthusiast taking car pictures - with varying results.

In dubio pro auto could be my motto ... ---

Looks like you get a few UK based cars travelling over for some of your events, Immo. (Or do people just stick UK plates on their cars for the shows?)

Hi, I think it is a little bit of both. High end, rare cars as shown at Schwetzingen very often have British owners.

Post WW2-cars participating in rallyes are mostly German or Swiss owned.

British cars have a great reputation here!

This is a rare one, only 100 were ever built

Had a Vauxhall Firenza many years ago but only a mildly hotted up 2.2 rather than a 302ci version. IIRC, mine dropped its radiator onto the lower pulley and lost all its coolant in a terminal fashion. :(

Unfortunately, a lot of them were doing this and had big plumes of steam coming out of them,

They can be a little prone to overheating if they're sat still (in traffic) for too long. Some owners use a waterless coolant (http://www.evanscoolants.co.uk/products/0) to reduce the problem.

The Vauxhall Firenza (sold in South Africa as Chevrolet) came first by about 5 years.

Mk 1 Escort was introduced in '67 with the Viva HC coming along in '70 and the Firenza in '71. (According to Wiki, anyway!)
