CLASSIC and important CARS - open thread:

And the mkII escort in '75.

D'Oh!

My only excuse is that it was early and I didn't have my reading glasses on!

The HC/Firenza is more Cortina sized than Escort. Loved mine but couldn't afford a new engine so it had to go to the big garage in the sky! The chap who deals with my bike MOTs has a Firenza with a Rover 3 1/2 lump in it. Sounds fabulous but needed a bit more exhaust than it had when I heard it - 3' of plain stainless pipe on each side wasn't exactly a silencer!!!

ETA another D'Oh! The Capri (smaller engines, not the 3l!) is probably the closest Ford to the Firenza with the Cortina being closer to the Viva HC.

Difficult to know (in situations like the badge/mascot) which element to focus on - both work equally well! The above shot makes the choice easier since there isn't much of a mascot but the rad cap is interesting in itself.

Bit of a grotty bumper!

It wasn't in the best condition. Someone commented on flickr that they had restored this exact car sometime after this photo, so it looks a bit better now .
If you click on the bottom pic you can see it after restoration in the comments.

I especially like this one it, sometimes a tight framing of an isolated element works and in this case that is one of those times.

Hi, thank you for your friendly comment! :) I chose tight framing and f 4 to avoid distracting background and to obtain some isolation.

To avoid other visitors, I asked the organizers to grant me admission 2 hours before the general public.

Of course, with 120 vehicles, this gives me only one minute/car, if I wanted to achieve full coverage ... ---

Another Aston (British owned, as I found out during a chat with the owner):

Apparently much nicer as a road car than the more iconic Gullwing - you can breath some semblance of fresh (cool!) air and hear more than motor and road rumble.

Hi, I heard from 300 SL Gullwing owners that its ventilation is not very good, as it was at that time ... However, most Gullwing owners have a convertible, too ... ---

To complement the Knightsbridge-300 SL pictures, a few from the MVC Event (in matching colours):

Gorgeous cars in both forms!

The gullwings were basically race cars so less designed for comfort than speed - as long as the occupants could survive in the cabin, that was good enough! Same goes for GT40s, Daytona Cobras or pretty much any of the breed.

I could not agree more! :)

A Gullwing:

Not sure this counts as a classic or important, but it's a beast for sure! Looks better in the flesh than in photographs I will say that.

The first Jeep model, the Bantam Reconnaissance Car (BRC-40), photographed during Army testing, 1941. (Work on a hand-built prototype had begun on July 17, 1940, and was delivered for Army testing on September 23, 1940.)

1969 Aston Martin DBS

It was a love at first sight when I saw the movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service".

Jensen Contraceptor! (The transmission tunnel made any shenanigans … difficult!)

Hi, I have always seen JENSEN as an AWD and ABS innovator. --- But they appear to have an eventfull history when you start reading ... ---

An ADLER (pre-WW2 (in flight)):

My '71 Land Rover had ABS. Well. you had to push VERY hard on the pedal to lock the brakes!!! ;)

Looks like a good one to have as a daily driver (rather than a trailer/show queen/prince!). Reasonably tidy but a few battle scars so no need to be too precious about it. IF you can live with its rather prodigious thirst for super-unleaded!!!

Hi, I cannot estimate how high the running costs would be in Germany. Super-unleaded is not available any more here.

So, one must use special additives, from the net.

But these are the things one does for love, ariel7515 ... ;)

Super-unleaded is not available any more here.

Isn't it? How do people who run performance cars manage without 98 RON or better fuels? Can't rely purely on additives or do they?

Hi, they use so-called Super-Plus now, I suppose. - I am not sure, however, whether this is really equivalent to unleaded Super. I shall ask high-end GT owners ...

But, sorry, super-unleaded is available here, but not the old Super ... :sorry:

No leaded available here these days, either. Not many vehicles need it now - most have been converted to run happily on unleaded.

Super unleaded here is 97-99 RON, with "normal" fuel being 95 RON. We run all our petrol vehicles on super since they're all toys rather than tools and seem to prefer the expensive juice!

Hi, we have a Super E10 here, too. I contains some bio-fuel, which is said to be good for the environment, but a lot of acreage is used to grow the green ingredient.

This is said to be not good for cars, so I avoid it, using only Super fuel for my cars.
