CLASSIC and important CARS - open thread:

Bentley cars are always “classics”!

:agree:

At the Classic Gala 2019 there was a large Bentley section to celebrate 100 Years Bentley, displaying many cars :

"Emily's sister" :

Taking a closer look, "Emily's sister" looks more like Icarus, should be called Icara, perhaps :D ... :

Hi, last Sunday, at the MAC 2019 it was extremely hot. The car-park at lunchtime:

Hi, GTIs are very frequent here. Most have been heavily modified and tuned, however ... --- :

Hi, presented at the IAA in Frankfurt this weekend (for early adopters ... ) --- :

Classic? Debateable, although it's possibly rare enough to qualify.
Important? Well, it is to me since it's what I learned to drive in, although that one was a TL rather than the upmarket GTL version shown here!

Just outside Matala, a hippy Mecca in South Crete,

Hi, the R4 was personally important for many, being their first car.

The parking lot of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, my dear alma mater, has lots of them in 1973 :

Hi, a memorable car, our rental holiday Suzi, on Fuerteventura in 1987 (slidescan 2005) :

Hi, introduced 50 years ago, not very successful in the marketplace (in Germany), the VW-PORSCHE 914:

Does this count taken with my phone at a soapbox derby!

Well, whether it's a classic, time will tell. Contact me 30 years from now ...

But it is clearly something new here in this thread ... ---

Hi, rare here
Rare anywhere: if only because they were terrible rust buckets. In the late 1960s there was one that was often parked near a friend's place in North London. It became something of a running joke for us to "measure" the progress of the rust up the wings.

Hi, there are apparently many reasons for the Alpine's rarity, one being rust. The other being its position in the marketplace. Apart from the American-inspired styling,
it does not seem to offer more than the competition. With few cars sold, a thin dealership, it must be difficult to keep them running in Germany ... ---

Mechanically, they're pretty simple - Ford V8 in front of a Ford gearbox but, as you say, they rusted badly (or well [from a tinworm's PoV!!!]). There are a few Alpine specialist suppliers here but I can't imagine that body panels are cheap since it appears that they are made to order or in small batches.

It was only the Tiger that was a V8 though. The standard model had the 1725cc engine from the Hillman Hunter/Sunbeam Rapier with twin SU carbs (from the Hunter GT & Singer Vogue). I did see one once with a Holbay and twin DCOE 40's taken from the H120.

I did my apprenticeship in a "Roots" garage. I started in 1978, and went through Simca and Peugeot before it closed in 1980 without me finishing my apprenticeship......

Here's an oddity spotted in Exmouth. I think it just about qualifies as a car with an oversized boot.
