Beginner Close up on Migrant Hawker Male.

Great tonal range… but a tad too soft!

Another shot taken at the same time further away actually seems much sharper.

Yes but not at the right place!
If you did focused on the dragonfly, the sharper area,
as I see it, is the twig!!!

Either…
  1. the focus point was not precise or
  2. there is a back focus issue

Odd, I see the thorax in focus, but the legs on the twig are not. I will have to check the RAW file in the nikon software to see where the focus point was when I am at home.

They look sharper over at Flickr (as do all our images I think). I don't think it is a matter of out of focus but rather very narrow DoF, which at f/5.6 is not surprising. It does mean that most of the subject is soft.

FWIW my overall impression of the first is (and my first impression was) that it is soft, and my overall impression of the second is that enough of it is sharp/clear enough not to give me an overall impression of softness (I would prefer more within the DoF, but that is a different, personal taste matter - the overall impression of softness, or not, feels like more of a cognitive/physiological/perceptual matter).
