It seems going a posh gaff (Muncaster castle) is the key or least going where they hang out on a nice day.

I have not seen many as they are not around on my local patch and they seem to have a short flying season

Do you know why that is or is it just chance? I normally only see them in my garden when my apple tree is in blossom (great for insect photography).
 
Excellent they are very difficult to photograph never stay still for long
