This was St James Park, London, right at the end of last year. I took some bird food with me. I've never seen so many Coots coming up so close to me. Normally they run a mile. Here they run to you.

Same thing here, Dave, these Coots are everywhere…
the only difference to here is that yours are mainly males
as ours females and these can be quite aggressive when
it comes to food!

How can you tell Daniel?

If I may borrow —but not edit — your take Dave
for a little demonstration…

Red is adult male: flat top and triangular shield
Yellow is ad. female: curved top and tear shape.

Interesting ... everything I have read indicates that sexing can only be done by measurement or 'biological' testing, where is your reference to the shape of the cere (shield)?

So what about the big fella with the orange beak , coot in drag :p

"The shield shape is valid only on adults. Teens
and chicks may be very difficult read confusing."

This was told to me by a teacher at the Graz uni!

Well, you learn something new every day

Aggressive whatever lake they are on. This is my local lake in Kent. They don't like it when I'm feeding the birds (enough for everyone) and another Coot comes in.

They seem to have flatter heads then I've ever noticed.

Nice photo, in hyde park they often start fights with black headed gulls for no reason and despite the gulls being bigger, they always run or fly off.
