Yes
A kind of reportage. :D

This event takes place every year in Kilwinning (Scotland).
It's called The Papingo Shoot and held by the "Ancient Society of Kilwinning Archers".
The first recorded Papingo shoot was in 1483.
OK, enough of the BS....some pics.

Basically if you "Ding Doon the Doo" you win the prize and become captain for the year.
Nothing fancy just plain, old fashioned bows but with rubber tipped arrows.
The old table style grave stones are covered in chips caused by arrow heads from days gone by. :wacky:

:) I've done a little work on Kilwinning Abbey. There's now a lovely flagpole on the roof that got a lot of objection from the Papingo Society who thought it would interfere with their shoot.

I thought it was a joke at first but true enough! Apparently the papingo is a pidgeon hence as you say "Ding Doon the Doo" or "shoot down the pidgeon"!

It is a beautiful old building.

Great bit of 'reportage' Garnock ... and some good pics to back it up ... (y)

A great bit of history preserved ... not so much 'mind the pigeon sh*t' as you look up as (don't) keep an eye on the arrows ... ;)

Would have been good to see an arrow on the way up though ... :D

:p

Great story and surprised I had never heard of that. As you say given the age of the event you think it would attract a bigger crowd. Did VisitScotland do the marketing? ;)

great shots BTW. #2 is a classic that is well taken and on it's own would get many a viewer wondering.

Ha! Great stuff. Love the crowd going wild! :D

Nice bit of history... we do have some weird and wonderful traditions dont we?
:)

Look on the bright side, at least you got out with your camera this year;)

As you say, not much of a crowd. If they started using real arrows again then that might have been different:)

Who done dinged the doo doon?

A loon fae doon the toon done dinged the doo doon.

I bet you couldn't say that once you have had a few 'refreshments';)

What an amazing story about a local tradition Cameron.
I had heard something about it in the past but really...i had no idea what it was all about.

A huge bravo to all the members who are still trying to keep this tradition alive.
As we all know, these things just dissapear and forgotten for ever.

Thanks Dimitri.
A quick Google for Papingo or Popinjay (same thing) will bring up quite a few results.
Here's one;

The Kilwinning Archers are mentioned halfway down the page.

A loon fae doon the toon done dinged the doo doon
Now correct me if I'm wrong, Dimitri.
You live in Troon ..... right?
Could slot into the above quote nicely, couldn't it ? :D

"A loon fae doon the toon in Troon done dinged the doo doon."

:coat: OK, I'm gone !
