Though the bird is in the shade against some kind of higher key light,
your rendition shows it very well and properly detached from the BG.

Some should look, see and learn from this. Bravo!

Smart shot, Mark...if it were mine I'd lift the Shadows a bit and drop the Saturation on that foliage in the background.

It's been absolutely ages since I photographed Dippers, must catch up with some soon.
 
I have never seen a dipper so would be happy with a shot like this but I also would lift the shadows on the bird and tone down the background green

Great shot, possibly the bird is a touch dark but I quite like the bg, its another one of them that 'shouldn't work' but for me does (y)

I've got mi eye on a couple locally but still to make an attempt at any photos, if mine are half as good I'll be happy :)
