The aircraft crashed into Sólheimasandur on Wednesday, November 21st, 1973, at around 14:00 as reported by the Aviation Safety Network. It was flying from Höfn in Iceland's east coast and onboard were seven crew members.

The Douglas R4D-8 US Navy transport plane had delivered supplies at Hofn Hornafjördur Airport for the radar-station in Stokksnes, Iceland. En route the airplane encountered severe icing. The crew were not able to maintain altitude. A forced landing was carried out on an ice covered river on near coast of Iceland. The ice broke but the airplane did not sink. No one was injured in the crash.

Moody, like it and the back story.

How easy is this to get to now? We went 5 years ago and it was easy to follow the markers from the main road but as I understand it, access is a bit more difficult these days, with locked gates to dissuade visitors.

Cannot use vehicles to get there anymore you need to either walk 4km or get a bus (during the day) from the car park by the main road. it was 4km hike at midnight for these shots :)

Cold feet too! Wouldn't like to get caught in a blizzard while walking down or back.

Yes planning and having a backup in case is a must at that time of night....
