Well my Elephant Hawk moth has finally hatched and what a visual delight it is,
good God it's a big un (The caterpillars {larvae}, can grow to the length and thickness of a large thumb) I found him/her as a caterpillar back in August/September 2020. It soon developed a hard casing {pupa/chrysalis} in which it underwent the near-magical transformation over winter from caterpillar to moth.
He/she's been sat in a glass biscuit barrel on my office windowsill all that time and I wasn't expecting it to emerge till May, it was just by chance I noticed it hanging from a branch/twig I'd put in the container. As Moths go it's stunning, the pattern, colour and hair is something else. Will let him/her go in a day or two after my Granddaughter has seen it (she's been following its journey) ....
This is what it looked like when I found it ....
