My first surprise was to see a Goosander family of two
adopt an orphan. They take care of it making sure that
it grows as much as the original two… though with some
caching up to do.

The two older chicks were playing not too far off her scope
and that left her and the orphan enjoying a long evening.

A little small in the frame Daniel but great to see it having a stretch :)

A little small in the frame…

Right, and this IS a small frame as it was metered at
262+ meters. As always, it is not the bird that is impor-
tant to me —and mostly my client— but the scene that
happens to include these birds in this case!

Thanks for looking!

I have to ask ... what is the scene without the birds?
Don't get me wrong I think that including the environment in a wildlife shot is often a recipe for a better image but there has to be something appealing in that environment to make it that way.

I have to ask ...
… by all means Roger!
what is the scene without the birds?
A perfect shot!
I am a photographer with a devotion for image hunting
in any / all situations… as illustrated in my book on the
south Styrian wine land.

So, to answer you question, I removed the birds and
renders the take as layout element as used on a center-
fold title page in a magazine for example. See below.

Because of the birds, I could not exploit the sunlight beam
penetrating the canopy deeply to the water surface without
rendering them too dark and looking artificial.

The appeal, for me, in this layered composition is the illus-

tration of a wild, healthy, clean marsh environment where
it must be great to grow up (if one is a birdie) and
contem-
plation scene for lovers of Mother Nature's the secret spots.
