Epic news Gov to bring forward ban on new dirty cars to 2030

I think there will be more infrastructure once the Govt and private companies can work out how to make a profit.

Very much this.

there'd need to be standard sized for cars, vans, heavy duty lorries etc but I am surprised this doesn't seem to being explored in the west.

The battery pack for a Nissan Leaf (1st generation) weighs somewhere around 300kg so hardly an easy swap. Some small electric scooters (bike type, not the toy things!) have swap-out batteries but very limited range. Besides which, you'll never get the bigger companies to agree on a "standard"!

I can see the price of ICE fuel rising steeply after the new sales ban. Might take a few years though!
I would say it would take a good few years. If there is currently over 40 million cars in the UK and sales are dropping even before last year, it would take at least 20yrs to get most of the ice cars replaced.

Depends how determined government is to reduce emissions.

I wonder what will happen with motorbikes, will they be still internal combustion?
I hope so, not really interested in an electric motorbike
Cars for me are a means of transport so if if electric cars take over I won’t be too bothered but motorbikes are a passion it has to have an engine
At least with bikes they can pretty much be kept going for ever, I’m rebuilding my 1984 Yamaha 350LC2 all consumable and engine parts are still available

My Mk1 Escort is a passion too......

I suspect what will happen is that you can still enjoy ICE in a recreational way similar to how horses have changed from transport or tool to sports and hobbies. So you’ll probably pay a premium for a bike, and then for the fuel. Still a hobby or passion. Just a more expensive one.

Or like film!

Smart Car Manufactures and dealers will only be selling hybrid vehicles in 5 years time never mind this made up 10 years people are clinging to.
buying a new diesel in the week before i doubt if you will find dealers with them
Smart car manufacturers will be building whatever people want to buy. Car manufacturers, from their research of sales patterns, are only expecting just over half of their annual car sales to have some sort of electrification by 2025.

Then the government would have to run a scrappage scheme to get people out of their fossil fueled vehicles. It really wouldn't worry me if the cost of a litre of Shell's finest, doubled or tripled. I still intend on keeping my car.

Even Harley have an electric option now. Not ridden one or seen it in the flesh but apart from the lack of noise, it's apparently very good. As with EV cars, acceleration is seamless.
I do like the sound of a lazy twin though. Not so keen on screaming stinkwheels though! :p

Yes I saw that electric Harley apparently it’s very good
I’m old fashioned though, a bike has to have an engine :p
The stinkwheels are great fun and it’s rewarding to ride something that I’ve restored

Ha, stolen cat. converters. I see all the parked up taxis are old diesel ones. Must be their fuel cost that is preventing drivers make a profit as fairs dried up.

Scrappage scheme of 2017 was a bust. It subsidised the wealthy to buy new cars but did nothing to help people who actually drive old polluting cars to buy affordable used cars.

Unless new scrappage scheme gives you actual money for scrapping most polluting cars on the road. Or May be give two years TFL free travel. I honestly don’t see it any help other than help with profit margins for car manufacturers.

Your definition of smart car manufacturers sound a lot like 1900’s stable owner;)

There wasn't a government scrappage scheme in 2017.

Many years ago, I was due to take my test on an Elsie (350 with 250 panels...) but the owner put it into the front of an artic the week before the test. Put me off 2 wheels for a while.
I like the noise that some bikes make but now have the hearing aids that they (and other loud things) caused! The 88" Shovelhead Harley I looked after for a mate had straight through pipes and I could hear it when the owner started it. A kilometre away, the far side of a hill!

Well, they certainly made it look quick and easy.

I saw this on TV months ago but maybe you can google it.

When I worked in the garage at my last job we had recalls on several ev’s which meant the battery had to come out, there were a few safety protocols to be carried out before the tech could touch the battery, one in fact was another tech standing by with a wooden rod !, the batteries were damn heavy requiring a few of us around it to lift it out/in and they tended to be low down in the boot or under the rear seats making the whole process a right pain. Glad I’m out that now.

Having battery in the boot or under rear seat must be hybrids. That complexity is one of the reason I don't think parallel plug-in hybrids are a good idea. The only acceptable hybrid to me is i3 REx, where you get all benefit of EV, plus a backup generator to get you out of trouble from infrastructure failures.

Properly designed EV that has never been intended to take ICE will have battery under the floor. You'll need 2 jacks, a car jack to lift up the car, a smaller jack to lower the battery, no manual work required.

That’s still 40% without and the off street parking may not have space for charging, or you may not fit as many cars there.
And not forgetting there are a lot of 7 / 8 year old's in families that will be wanting to drive in 10 years time.
eg my opposite neighbour moved in with 2 young kids, 1 car and one works van.
The car was on the drive, the van in the road.

By the time they moved out, a couple of years ago, both kids had, had cars, for a couple of years so that's 3 in the road.
And of course there were other people with growing families also parking a car or two in the road, not always considerately either :(
It went from an almost "bare road" to parking at a premium in less than 10 years...

I can remember that happening where I used to live, then we nearly all got drives put in
and that really caused problems for the few that didn't, one space for 3 or 4 vehicles, we were
lucky the front lawn was big enough for 4 cars

The new Kia EV6 looks interesting. 0-60 in 3.5s and can go from 10%-80% charge in 18 mins. Just 5 mins charging gets you 60 miles.

Charge times depend on battery state, type of charger, temperature... e.g. It isn't getting from 10 to 80% in 18 minutes off a 50kw charger :)
I'd still have one though.

I spoke to an ex colleague today about one, tells me I can book a place in the queue for £100 refundable deposit, but no definite specific spec or pricing data yet, I’ll hold off although I did suggest he sticks me down for first refusal when the demo is up for sale. It may replace her car car but not the ice ragtop toy.
