In this post @Andy Johnson nudged me into making a video about my post processing workflow. At two hours long it probably won't be of much interest but yesterday I went out to capture some images to use as examples in the video. Out of around 650 raw captures I ended up with 34 JPEG images in this album at Flickr, a success rate of about 5% (or a failure rate of about 95%, depending on how you prefer to look at it), which is not unusual (for me), especially for small subjects like this that I don't have much experience or skill with.

The images were captured hand-held (I shall try using some support next time I tackle such small subjects, perhaps a steadying stick, to see if that improves the success rate). I used my FZ330 bridge camera with KX800 twin flash, and for I think all of these images, a Raynox 150 and 250 stacked (There are several in the album, mainly or all flies, that used just the Raynox 150.) The images were batch processed in DXO Optics Pro and Silkypix, with image-specific adjustments in Lightroom.

Thank you Nick for your highly informational video tutorial which i found extremely useful. I wonder if i can translate what you have done in DXO and silkypix to use in Photoshop. Thanks again.

I'm glad it was useful. :)

I don't know; I'm not familiar with modern versions of Photoshop. The only version I've used is CS2.

After trying a lot of photo editors I eventually concluded that I couldn't find one that was best (to my way of thinking) for all the aspects that matter to me (sharpness, colour, clarity, local adjustments etc etc), which is why I moved to using multiple software products. That is of course very specific to where I'm at and where I want to go. Your (and anyone else's) mileage may very definitely vary.

Certainly useful Nick, and a lot of food for thought. I wished i could be so thorough with my batch editing but it's mainly the processing that i was interested in. At the end of the day, what you produce is a style you have developed yourself and is very pleasing to to the eye. Well mine anyway. :) I need to develop my style and technique with the tools i have in my little box. :) Thanks again for the video.
