looking for a guide how to try to get a pic of the milky way. never done any astro before
what type of focal length , what aperture , what shutter speed , any filter required
anything else i should do

thanks

The 500 and 600 rule are popular, give them a google and have a read up.

Generally the wider the focal length and faster the aperture, the longer it will allow you to take the image and more clear the MW will be.

did you made it in the end? if yes can you post some pictures?

I was always told anything more than a 20 second exposure will start to drag the stars, so if you want pinpoint dots, keep to about 10-15 seconds.
Have a look in my flickr albums for some astro shots. Im no professional but I was happy with these for a first attempt. All the settings are detailed against each shot.
