Gardening. Protect gravelled area while digging?

Out the front I have a large gravelled bit. Next to it is a little raised wall "bed" bit with about a foot or so width of soil down the length. Its all overgrown and weedy so really needs digging completely out, remove all weeds/plants and plant a hedge or something.
Any idea what to do about not getting the gravel bit filled up with dirt etc whilst the work happens? And it would be handy if it caught any dirt spillage so when finished I can put it all back in the bed area again.

although Toolstation/Screwfix will probably be a cheaper option (and deliveries over £10 are free IIRC...)
