Got a set of Rogue Gels and used them with some water drops as the easier way to test. Bizarrely I got all sorts of colours with mixed gels in shots...

They are very nice colours Mike, I prefer the second shot, almost like a bullet hole in glass, nice work.
 
Yes, I didn't get a chance to try again this weekend, but essentially, the 3 changes I made were using a plastic bag suspended over a baking tin (normally a pyrex lid over the sink with the tap dripping), using pre-crumpled tin foil as the backdrop instead of coloured chopping boards, and finally the gels. Does seem to provide better results.
