I went for filling the frame as much as I could when taking these to get as much feather detail as possible.

I like the close crops, particularly with captive birds.

The focus is smack-on with the eyes, beautiful and sharp; however, I feel closing the aperture by a further stop may have rendered greater feather detail if that was your stated aim. As for the crop, I'm happy viewing these as it draws attention to the eyes and no further distractions.
