Being lucky enough that the beach is only a few minutes from home, I went down for a little walk today while it was quiet. Perched myself beside a boulder, near some rock pools where I've seen this Heron and loads of Oystercatcher before. I thought I'd be lucky to spot the Heron at the far end of the pools maybe, or some smaller birds nearby. Much to my surprise, the Heron flew straight towards my (fairly obvious) spot! It ended up settling about 15 metres from me, in plain sight, so sadly (I hate disturbing wildlife) there was no way I was going to stay hidden from it. As it settled I tried to freeze hoping it may miraculously ignore me... Oddly, I had been taking shots basically the entire time it flew in, and it only seemed to notice me when I stopped!

You make your own luck. You made the effort, you got the images you were hoping for. Well done.

Thanks Keith, I was very happy just to have the experience. Finding out after that I'd gotten the shots was a bonus.

Russ, I found the panning pretty straightforward on these as he was flying in a straight line, fairly large in the frame and gliding in on the wind with very few wingbeats.
Compared to the Fulmars/gulls I've been practicing on at a distance, with the sea behind, and in a gale; this was a cake walk!
