Help, please, identifying an insect

Took this image last week when I was able to get out for a time. Problem is that I have been struggling to identify exactly what it is. Have checked all the books I have got (quite a few) and also a number of online sites, but I cannot find anything that quite matches the markings and colours on this particular insect.

So if anyone has any ideas it really would be appreciated, as I hate not being able to identify what I have seen

Thanks Andy, much appreciated. The Pellucid Fly certainly looks to be the most promising I have seen. Had checked Naturespot (which is a brilliant site) but had obviously not gone far enough!
