My trail camera finally picked up a Hedgehog last night!

This was the first image on the camera, followed by numerous images of two local cats polishing off the food

So, what can I do reduce the possibility of cats devouring all the food before the hog(s) get a chance?

Is putting a "Hog House" in the garden a good idea?DSCF0001-1.jpg

Well to reduce the chance of cats polishing off the cat food(?) you currently put out.....how about buying hedgehog specific food.

For the record this is the advice given on the RSPCA site but also repeated in other places, I have italicised & underlined the section ;)

Feeding hedgehogs
Leave out foods like tinned dog or cat food (not fish-based) and crushed dog or cat biscuits. Specialist hedgehog food is also recommended and can be bought from wildlife food suppliers. Never feed hedgehogs milk as it can cause diarrhoea; instead provide plain, fresh water in a shallow bowl.

Best of luck in keeping the hedgie visiting and thriving.....they will be needing to get up to hibernation weight over the coming months. And on that latter point....yes, a hog home is a good thought, there are downloadable plans to make them as well ones to buy.

We haven't got a hedgehog house but do have a feeding station/box which is made from old bits of wood.

In my limited experience it needs to be pretty substantial and the food needs to be a long way from the small entrance or behind baffles, or other visitors will get it. This is one of the local cats getting a long way in before I added the baffles

Peanuts (the type that you would put in a bird feeder) were always a favourite of our hedgehogs....10-12 would arrive each evening to polish off the pile.

I have a Hog in my Garden - he/she lives under my shed- I put out "Puppy Food" the local cats seem to avoid this for some reason, also If I see a cat he'd get a soaking with my hose :)
