Can I suggest then you get a 2 day tour bus pass, go round once to get a feel for what is where, then hop on hop off to locations you want to see/photograph.
Take walking shoes as there are lots of cobbled streets, my Mrs hurt her feet on day 1 because she was wearing fashion shoes and every time she triped she pulled my arm half out of it's socket.
We were approached by people wanting to take us round teh Vatican/Museum who would queue for us then let us queue jump, but I think they have banned that now (understandably). We didnt have any trouble with pick-pockets etc, although most guide books seem to say it's rife.
Wife and I loved the place, apart from a lot of beggars in all of the tourist spots of course which was pretty grim.
I'm sure you will have a great time.
