I can hear them - but hardly ever see them

We have at least a pair of owls living in the very near vicinity of our garden, however we rarely see them as they rarely leave the cover of the trees. In the winter we do occasional see the odd one very briefly in the morning before it is chased into cover by daytime birds. We do have a small population of rats, which can be heard being caught by the owls on odd occasion. Does anybody have tips on how to take photos of these magnificent birds? I've seen some fantastic shots and wonder if these are wild birds? I would imagine it's very difficult to capture wild birds within the short time they are active before the light disappears.
