I was drinking on average 4 pint mugs of coffee a day and the odd cup of tea.. I had always been led to believe coffee was the caffine drink and you shouldn't drink at night blah blah... Turns out as every man and his dog seemed to know that Tea has more caffine than coffee...

Anyways I have gone to decaffe coffee and decaffe tea.. to be perfectly honest there doesnt seem much difference.. tastes as good..

So from a regular 6 hrs sleep (I am 62 yrs old so not really need that much) I am now getting 8 rs sleep and falling to sleep a lot quicker as well....

Thus no downsides just benefits..

The only fly in the ointment.. I aked about decaffe on FB before christmas and got lots of responses telling me about tea being caffine and what brands to buy blah blah... unbeknowing to me my eldest daughter had bought us for christams a coffee machine thingy for making latte which I like.... ooops

Anyways.. Glad I did it and would reccomend anyone else changing over as theres no downside to it :) Well none that i could find lets put it that way .....

Glad it's working for you.
Why the oops regarding the coffee machine though?

Two points:

I cant find any decaffe latte for it ...

They can have more caffein in their raw state but coffee retains more when brewed and on top of that is less diluted than tea

caffeine withdrawal can actually be pretty bad but glad that seems to have skipped you.

not sure that 4 cups constitutes a lot though, that's up to mid day for me plus large extra shot (4 in total) takeaway coffee weekday mornings :D

don't have any bother sleeping either which is odd.

4 pints average.. thus sometimes more but if out workign then less... might be an age thing as well.... also I didnt have any bother sleeping either.. never said I did.. what I am saying is i do get to sleep quicker and do sleep longer ..whch for me are an added bonus i suppose as thats not why I stopped..

I was merely passing on my thoughts... seems quite negative feedback like I have done somehtign wrong.. i wasnt preaching or telling anyone to do it themselves..just a reccomendation as no downside...

I was just making conversation. not sure I see anything negative, just people chatting?

i didnt quote you in that response because i was speaking about the whole tone of the thread seeming a bit negative.. not any one person :) from the first reply onwards....

Which coffee machine can't you find latte for? MiL likes latte but wanted decaff and as a Tassimo user, she ended up getting decaff espresso pods and giving us the full bore pods from the latte packs (which Mrs Nod used for making americanos or for adding an extra shot to "normal" coffees.)

I avoid caffeine as much as possible these days. Even coca cola gives me tingling in the hands which I used to experience when drinking caffeinated drinks.

My biggest weakness is chocolate. I have, in the past, eaten enough that I’ve stayed awake all night because I didn’t realise how powerful theobromine could be.

I have suffered for years with not being able to sleep at night. Always have something on my mind. Not paranoia type stuff but just generally thinking about stuff.

I thought something that would work, would be to pack in caffeine completely and I did. Caffeine free tea and coffee.

And I have to say, it made absolutely no difference to me at all at night. I think it just affects some a lot more than others

My comment was also not meant negatively.
I assumed you meant an actual coffee maker, not a pod machine.

I had heart murmurs caused by caffeine during my 50's, drink caffeine free coffee but not tea now, had no murmurs since for the last 10 years.

I have one coffee every morning, I've given up sugar - which was harder than giving up smoking! so I use sweetener. I'm doing the ketogenic diet and coffee is actually recommended for it, with cream instead of milk. I could knock caffeine easily, but that one coffee and the odd cup of tea later on isn't going to cause me any harm. |I'd only get worried about it if I was drinking 10 cups a day with some high caffeinated energy drinks on the side.

I like a good coffee before bed, with a brandy to wash it down, I sleep fine, never tried de-caff, but one day I might, too much is bad for you I hear, knew a guy who drank red bull constantly and it seemed very addictive and he was jumpy all day.
Had a quorn sausage at breakfast in a hotel once, even wrapping it in bacon did nothing for the taste-or lack of- why would they serve quorn sausage with normal breakfast fare I ask though?

I suppose it's for vegetarians or people who were once omnivores but have since given up meat. I've seen it advertised on the breakfast menu in some hotels a few times but it had to be specifically ordered.

Just about on topic....
I have never felt the effects of caffeine, I will drink coffee because I like the taste and also actually like the flavour of redbull. But not once have I ever felt effects which I find REALLY annoying, especially half way through a long overnight drive!

I would just caution about being 62 and drinking latte: one finds sometimes that one can develop a lactose intolerance with age, leading to an excess of wind production when drinking a lot of milk. Or more bluntly, when I got into a habit of drinking three latte's a day, I didn't half fart a lot. I'm 62 also.

Being Italian i used to drink coffee like water, but i knocked the caffeine variety on the head about a year ago, when a specialist advised doing so would help alleviate prostate problems i was having (it worked), and like you i now sleep quite well, better than before, and nod off within 5 minutes of trying :)

I went to De-caffe about 18month ago on the advice of my Urologist, amongst other things It give you the urge to urinate.
Which gets even worse with a benign enlarged prostate... which is the fate of all men...
Even then I am up at least 4 times a night. I have not had a full nights sleep for over twenty five years.

With you on the first one Dave, but just reading, "and also actually like the flavour of redbull", makes my gums ache.

But each to their own.

Why is coffee less diluted than tea?
Because it takes much more coffee to make 1 cup than it does tea?

By weight theres more caffeine in tea than coffee, but it takes much less tea (by weight) to make a single cup.

I’d have thought that was obvious.

Might be obvious to a smart arse, but wasn't to me. :jawdrop:

A friend of ours was diagnosed with high blood pressure, top figure around 180. Gave up caffeine and BP back to normal. It’s a very powerful stimulant. We also have decaf tea in the house and nobody ever notices if they have tea when they visit. So, good for you. I found turning the blue light off on my devices helped with sleep too.

I’m always puzzled when people describe the amount of coffee they drink by stating the volume of water they drink — as the OP, 4 pints of water, unspecified amount/type of coffee. FWIW I drink the equivalent of 9 cups of espresso coffee a day using 1.5 ounces of arabica (somewhat less caffeine than in robusta). Also 4 mugs of tea, each 1 tea bag or teaspoon of tea. For various reasons I used decaf coffee (M&S CO2 extracted) and Redbush* (rooibos) tea for about 3 weeks recently. It had no effect or improvement to my balance and tinnitus (which is what I was hoping to achieve) but also no other effects such as on prostate or sleeping as mentioned above. I have happily gone back to normal coffee which I drink for flavour not caffeine!

Edit. Also no effect on my highish blood pressure.

*found I liked Redbush, which is zero caffeine. It doesn’t taste like tea but is the same kind of flavour unlike all those herbal teas.

I love coffee but not drank any for a very long time. I think it affects my health. I drink tea, couple of cups a day, black with sugar.

I have drank much less coffee over the last few years and pretty much just one cup with breakfast on weekends only.
I definitely agree I sleep much deeper and longer and don't miss it at all. lots of nice filtered water during the day for me now.
