If you want to deter squirrels, sprinkle a little chili powder over the seed. Birds can't taste the chili but squirrels can (and don't usually like it!) You can buy spray for the mouths of feeders too.

If I did that and the wife found out it wouldn't only be squirrel lips that were toasty !

It's technically illegal to feed grey squirrels - they're an invasive introduced species. Lucky for them that they're quite cute!
